A member of Robert’s pledge class provided detailed testimony about the severe hazing he, Robert and their fellow pledges were subjected to in the weeks leading up to Robert’s death. On February 22, 2012, Robert confided in his mother that he was “getting hazed bad now and need Xanax. ” When the fellow pledg e wondered “ what tonight will entail in our meeting ,” Robert re s ponded, “ at worst its 2 hr s. On March 15, 2012, Robert wrote to a fellow Del ta Sig pl e d ge on Facebook to ask if he was “ ready for ton i ght … apparently a rough meeting. As pledge class president, one of his responsibilities included communicating instructions/orders from Michael Qubein to his fellow pledges. Robert was the pledge class president, having been elected by his fellow pledges. Between February 19 and March 15, 2012, Robert confided in friends that “hazing is the least fun” aspect of the pledge process that Delta Sigma members “are hazing us like a mother fucker”, and that the hazing “….doesn’t seem worth it bc I’m being mind fucked continuously.”
Soon after bid night, Robert began expressing concern and anxiety about the hazing he and his pledge brothers were experiencing. They were told to drink the liquor until they had consumed all of it. On bid night, Robert and fellow pledges were put in a room, given a trash can, and each handed a bottle of hard liquor. The pledge process for Robert’s pledge class began with bid night. Michael claims he knew Delta Sig had a definition for ‘hazing’ but was not sure what it was. There is no record Michael received training for this role. In his role as Pledge Educator, Qubein was tasked with maintaining a positive New Member Education Program through prohibition of hazing. Michael was the Delta Sig Chapter officer responsible for conducting Delta Sig’s pledge program at HPU. Delta Sig, while maintaining authority to discipline individual members and chapters for violations, normally relies on chapter officers to relay Delta Sig’s policies on hazing and alcohol to the pledges and further relies on chapter officers to enforce those policies.Īt the time, Michael Qubein (son of HPU President Nido Qubein) was the Pledge Educator (e.g. Delta Sig authorizes the members of its local chapters to exclusively conduct the pledge and initiation processes. In January 2012, Robert began pledging Delta Sig (Delta Zeta Chapter) at High Point University (HPU).
